What is web hosting?
Web hosting is renting out services and technologies of companies to host websites on the internet. The hosting provider provides space on a web server for a website to store its files so it is available for viewing online. The users can access the website and its contents by searching your web address in the browsers.
What are the different types of hosting?
Shared Hosting:
In this type of hosting, your website shares a physical server with other websites. All the websites on the internet are stored on a server and are publicly available for users to access, the server’s job is to process requests from users and provide information about the website from the server so that the user can interact with the site. With shared hosting, one server stores all the files for several sites at once and accepts requests from users of all these sites.
Pros of Shared Hosting:
Since a common server is shared with other websites, shared hosting is low cost, the server’s maintenance costs are distributed amongst its users. The users can pay more to upgrade hosting services to allow more traffic handling and access to greater resources.
Shared hosting does not require much technical skills or in-depth knowledge of servers as they usually come with a control panel to facilitate the website management and installing updates and patches is carried out by the host providers.
Cons of Shared Hosting:
Shared hosting has some limitations because of sharing of processing power, memory and all other resources of the hosted server because of which one website consuming too much of resources might cause other websites on the same server to slow down, however hosting companies provide more than enough resources to accommodate their users and they are efficient in moderating highly trafficked websites.
One more risk associated with shared hosting is that your server’s IP address can be blacklisted if a website on the same server as yours is sending out spam.
Dedicated Hosting:
It is opposite of shared hosting. In dedicated hosting a server hosts one specific website only. All the files of that particular website are stored in that server.
Pros of Dedicated Hosting:
All the server’s processing power, memory and all other resources are committed to your website and no other user could cause your server’s IP address to be blacklisted by sending out spam.
Dedicated hosting allows clients the ability to customize and optimize the server settings and tweak the server configurations according to their requirements.
Cons of Dedicated Hosting:
Dedicated hosting comes at a greater cost, the price depends on how much the hosting provider is involved with the server maintenance and security.
Another limitation of a dedicated server is that it requires an in-depth knowledge of servers to take advantage of the customizability. Since the maintenance of the server is left up to the client, they are responsible for updating and installing patches to the server.
VPS Hosting:
Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a type of hosting which virtually mimics a dedicated server environment within a shared server, it is generally lower in cost than dedicated hosting but provides better reliability, security and performance than shared hosting.
One physical server hosts multiple virtual servers, each isolated from the others. Each VPS runs its own operating system, independent of other virtual servers hence working like a dedicated server.
Pros of VPS Hosting:
VPS hosting is less expensive than dedicated hosting that uses a physical server, the VPS can be customized according to your needs. VPS hosting plans are scalable and you do not have to pay for excessive resources that you are not using.
Cons of VPS Hosting:
You might need technical support as maintenance of a virtual private server requires technical skills and knowledge in this area.
Cloud Hosting
Cloud hosting makes websites accessible using cloud resources. In this type of hosting, solutions are not deployed on a single server but a network of connected virtual and physical cloud servers hosts the website. This provides greater flexibility and scalability.
Pros of Cloud Hosting:
Cloud servers have several benefits over traditional servers as clients can pay only when the resources are being used. It means it allows you to pay as per your need. In cloud hosting, the resources can be scaled as per your needs and the servers are redundants so that if one server goes down other servers will take its place and accept requests from users and perform the required tasks.
In cloud hosting, the data is stored on multiple servers and there are different server protocols to handle the wide spread data and it cannot be cracked easily which adds on its security and as the data is distributed on different servers, a single server does not need to bear all the load of uploading or downloading of files, hence, the load is distributed among the servers and the speed of the system increases
Cons of Cloud Hosting:
Cloud hosting is a reliable solution for your hosting needs but it requires in-depth knowledge about the servers and cloud architecture.
